a busy week..........

Once again needing more hours in a day.......
It's crunch week!
Deadlines are piling up and now finding sleep impossible.
Thankfully the Olympics are on in the middle of the night :)

I'm not one for hand building and most times can't even think straight.
As an invited artist of the Handmade Ceramic Tile Exhibition next month in Cleveland, Ohio;
I figured I had better get my flat on!
Delivery is February 24th and as I depart for the east coast on the 26th it was today or never.

Artists were allowed 5 tiles,  8" x 8"  ....... that's it.

I have been carving so much lately this is what I came up with.
40" of tree......

It will look pretty good behind my wood stove when it's done and just the catalyst I needed to finish that project!

The shelves are filling again!
although carving is taking more time than I should be taking these days......

A carved tile I'm thinking might be turned into a hot pad with wood rim.

and always more weaving.......

still cold here so it's been easy to stay in the studio.......

What was I thinking?!

Jumping down the last few blogs I wrote down I would post everyday.....
I cannot.....
My life is just not that exciting, ever!
As I sat at my spinning wheel contemplating things to update a homesick kid in Africa with and realizing the only thing I could come up with was;
I found your underwear in the dryer; so what are you wearing?
Thought about taking pictures but stopped myself.

I searched the window next to my wheel and said..... Oh thank God, it's snowing again!
It has snowed almost everyday since Nov. 22nd..... Punxsutawney Phil predicted 6 more weeks of winter so I believe I will take cousin Barney off the Christmas card list as he is still part of the inner circle up at Gobblers Knob.

Yesterday, I splashed olive oil all over myself while aggressively making salad.  Put on my same old work sweater this morning and thought a miracle had taken place while I slept as the oil stain had magically disappeared.  While brushing my teeth and almost choking myself to death realized my sweater was on backwards.... the true miracle, I didn't pass out or choke to death.

Yesterday was Elinor and Ethel day.  Elinor, my Mom used pick up Ethel my Grandma, each and every Friday; go get their hair done, do lunch, stop at Eddy's Butcher shop, Hough Bakery and grocery shop at the A&P on Fulton Road with a fistful of coupons.  It went on for years until they both became intoxicated with Aqua Net Hairspray inhalation and ended up at the bowling alley, rolling strikes and scratching lottery tickets. (all true)
Mom and Grams are both gone now but alas not wanting a family tradition to die I picked up Abby Saturday morning around 10 am and we were off for a day of Kent Farmers Market, The Geauga Butcher Shop (run by Dave, an Amish butcher who can rap about meat), the Cheese Co-op and finally ending at the Middlefield Flea Market.  It you get to the Middlefield Flea Market by 8 am they auction off chickens and rabbits for pennies.  As the girls are still laying I opted out of the livestock auction.
However when we pulled in the parking lot the place was packed with Amish buggies and 4 wheel drive trucks with bumper stickers stating; If It's Fly'n, It's Dy'n
We circled the lot and finally found a place for my tiny Japanese Import car, I fully expected to be keyed down both sides by the time I got out.  There are hundreds of booths at the flea market but the building was amazingly quiet.... We followed a guy out the back door just like lemmings.  Eureka, we found the red neck barn!!  We were stopped at the door and were asked;  Where is your wrist band?  You get three beers and food is on the side but I think they ran out, but we still got beer.  It's 10 am and I don't have a wrist band.  Also need camo underwear and a beard to get in this place.  The wristband checker gave us the event run down; fundraiser for Ducks Unlimited and there were 50 guns being raffled off.  Oh we sold 3,000 tickets so if you don't have a wristband you can't get in.  Well shoot, I said and we backed away.

We darted off to the other shops in the complex.  We stepped in horse poop, fresh and frozen; the frozen poop will take out a grown man faster than he can down a beer at a gun raffle!  We started at the antique mall, rolling to the Penny Pincher furniture shop and rounding our visit at the Authentic Indian Jewelry store, complete with crystals, antler lamps and smudge sticks everything had a gold sticker stating it was made in China.  While looking for cool beads in the Authentic Indian Jewelry Shop we heard a woman say.... I won a shotgun down there at the raffle.  And the other 10 woman fondling the authentic jewelry said:  OMG.... YOU ARE SO LUCKY!  What kind?  A pump shotgun!  Approving giggles all around!
I looked at Abby and we said; Gotta Go!

We drove back to her Kent apartment, dividing up the days booty from hunting and gathering.  I showed her how to cook liver and onions.  She was more impressed with liver costing .99 a pound than the taste.  She pulled one of my jars of homemade catsup down from the shelf and slathered the whole liver steak, declaring it OK.  Neil was hiding under the futon in shear disgust.

so as you can see I cannot possibly post everyday!

I could not grab the camera and take one more snow picture or underwear picture.
Instead I dug out last years garden pictures....... I really need a pop of color at the moment.

and lettuce ........

getting my groove back......

Sitting here looking out the window this morning ........
Just read Rachael's blog
then off to read the business blog of why she is there.... Mama Carts.....

After reading both blog posts I am realizing daughter and mother are on a vision quest this year.  As January came and went, along with show dead lines and entry fees I have no idea where I will be selling pots this year.  I do know I need to change the way I do business.  So buckle up!

having coffee with myself this morning.......
this is such a plain jane mug but it's my go to comfort mug..

On my way out the door this morning I swore I wouldn't post anymore snow pictures as it's 90 degrees in Benin and your Chaco's are melting into the dusty red dirt streets........
but how could I pass this up?
The snow is so deep you can sneak up on the nut monkeys, my new winter activity.....
The other winter activity .... Walking out the door, usually pre-sun up, early morning and have my nose hairs freeze up!  Serious face contortions and weird noises!  This morning with the wind, -15.  but behind the barn, no wind, -3..... staying behind the barn!

Morning drivel alert..... Betsy shared this little kitchen tip when she was here a week ago.  I believe I am the very last person to know this.  The little red dot on the side of the cling wrap...... PUSH IT IN, locking the roll of plastic wrap in the box.  This tip will make my life infinitely better!

The potter has returned to the building......
although the building is 52 degrees, but the throwing water is warm, as is the sheep skin I sit on.

a good way to start.......

the days are ticking down to DeCordova show and orders need to be filled.....

Yesterday I said out loud....... Adapt or Die.
Off all the things that circled round my brain, including listening to Michael Pollan, that phrase really popped out.  It's true in life, garden and studio.  As my body is aging I am adapting the way I do things. As the weather is changing my garden is changing.  As some of our natural resources (mines filled with minerals etc), political policies, and technology change so goes the studio.  This will be a year......

another post so soon?

Morning Rachael!

Ahhhhhh..... daughter #1, the ever in control, stay the course, a-fish-inado of Colorado rivers, Alaskan guide and bear chaser, I'm outta here, never homesick, queen of the passports........ is homesick in Benin, Africa.  The last few days of trying to communicate have me convinced there is a wildebeest running the 3G network.  We have tried Skyp, Facetime, ichat, AOL, google chat, talkatone app, heytell app and now realize..... a tin can with string would have worked!
But then in 2006, when she threw herself on Peace Corps doorstep, there was NO communication.  A package took 6 months to get to her.  I sent a lot of fuzzy cookies and hairy smokies those years, they ate them anyway.  This time around she has running water!!
We had a brief facetime yesterday and I got the tour of her apartment.... posh!  Well except for the rats in the ceiling.  Her table and two chairs had arrived, custom but then everything is custom because there is no IKEA or Walmart in Parakou.  Do you hear that fellow craftsmen????  She had to wait for the local furniture maker to make and deliver a table and chairs.  And they were beautiful!
As she sat on her concrete steps, outside her concrete block house, in 88 degree weather, she looked a little beat down and she was questioning what she was doing there.  Oh honey, you have taken yourself on a self imposed vision quest!  Honestly, as bad as she feels right now, I believe in my heart of hearts she will rock this trip.  Her partner on the ground, Ibraheim is the undimming light pushing her forward and focused.  They have a mission to get MAMACARTS off the ground with a Rockefeller grant.  One year to make it happen.  Do it now, run hard then come home and fish, drink beer and recover, you will never be sorry or look back..... I promise.

As our all too brief facetime ended I promised I would blog daily to keep her up on the home front.
So Rachael here is the run down.......

I know you are sweating to death in your concrete apartment...... we are buried in snow and living large in 4 degree weather.

there is a hoop house under that pile of white stuff...... OH and it's early morning here,

on my way back from the chicken coop this morning.....

waiting to be glazed........

winter carving......

new forms, not sure I love these yet......

on my reading table..... currently listening to "Cooked" by Michael Pollan.
It is blowing my mind and LOVE this book!!

Watched this great video on Minnesota Potters, Sharing the Fire.
If you watch you will recognize many of the studios and potter from our trip last May.

one chicken out this morning, the rest of the girls were complaining...... loudly!

found them!  The days are getting longer as I collected 5 eggs yesterday!
Two of the cuckoo marans are still  sporting bubble gum pink combs and molting but that should end soon.

This morning, coffee with SARAH JAEGER and my keyboard.
I will keep you posted daily on the homefront, I promise :)

Love you always, you are rocking the world ....... Mom

Normal???????

Trying to return to whatever normal is.......  Butch returned to work for two days but now back home, stationed on the back end of the snow blower.  All mice nesting in the snow shoot were blasted into orbit and relocated!  We have had so many storms this year it's becoming normal.  Some are lovely and enchanting.......

Others are just normal .......

I have tried to get to the studio each and everyday but somehow get side tracked.......in dog language; SQUIRREL!  Doesn't take much!   Yesterday I threw two pieces!  Count them two whole pieces!
Finding countless things to fill my days...... while cleaning the tub I picked a caulk scab on the back wall, promptly finding the entire rope of caulk in my hand and the fiberglass panel laying on the floor.  I have no idea how this stuff happens, it's an out of body experience.  I have a container of cleanser in one hand and my shower surround in my other.  Hmmmm..... I wondered where that occasional ant was coming from in the dead of winter.  Found them!  All of them!  I sprayed with vinegar, sprinkled with boric acid, waited a couple hours and repeated.  Looked good so I semi glued the wall back and am now looking for a new tub surround, cement board, 2x4's, insulation, vapor barrier and a cute guy to do this but can't get out of the driveway.  Is this how the Donner Party started because at this stage in my life I could eat the cute guy in a heart beat and save the chickens for entertainment!

Trying to find my way back to the land of normal I baked bread yesterday.  Made the snowy pilgrimage down to my awesome old lady neighbor bearing a quart of turkey soup, a loaf of bread and a dozen eggs.  I love getting hugs!  She also gave me a gift card to a full year subscription to Mary Janes's Farm magazine!!!  I read through my first issue and made pasta while reading how to keep bees and calm a goat before milking.... I could be in deep trouble here!  Honestly, moths to a flame!

We discovered our smart TV can get YouTube and have spent each and every night for a week watching videos on; sailing, gardening, rocket stove building, greenhouse building, pottery and how to caulk your tub surround.

Managed to a get a handle on an experimental teapot.  A nice chun glaze fired to cone 8 on carved porcelain.  If I can get to the studio I will be making more, the glaze breaks over the carving and pools nicely.

Took Rachael to the airport for her flight to Benin and now think I need to go once a week for entertainment.  While sitting there sipping my hot coffee and waiting for her to check in I thought my head was going to explode.  The joy of being tucked behind a pillar or post with a hot drink and people watching, Oooooo does not get any better!  Just watching the shoe parade is awesome, then let your eyes drift to the luggage!  Whoa!  Thinking I was cloaked in invisibility and voyeuristically lurking; a rather crunchy, bearded guy in a camo jacket and knitted watch cap sits down, one seat away from me.  He smiles that toothless grin toward my direction and I smile back, immediately looking away.  Where the hell is Rachael?  Stuck in the line of travelers, checking bags and I am a magnet.  To check my judgmental side I always say; this might be Jesus!  But then my other voice says; Nope!  While watching a large woman in a black hijab, pin 3 large colorful teething toys to her little daughters shirt, my peripheral vision sees him reach into his duffel bag and whip out a large squeeze bottle of Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, screw off the cap, lick the inside of the cap, screw it back on and squirt a stream into his mouth.  I waited for him to offer me a squirt but thankfully he did not.  Refreshed, he popped it back in his duffle, jumped up and and walked away.  I motioned to the darkly domed super secret security camera screwed to the ceiling, did you see this?.  Hearing the baby cry and fussing, the woman now surrounded by mountains of large pink luggage (I never saw or heard arrive), gives the sweet child a wet nap to chew on.  YUCK!  After a minute the cranky tike calmed down and chewed furiously!  Was it the alcohol or the cool wetness...... no idea. Jesus?  Nope, a desperate Mother.  It was freezing and snowing the day we lingered at the airport and yet there were so many people in flip flops talking on cell phones.  Really I could write about so much more but I have to go to the studio or redesign the garden or or or.......

It's coming!!!!

Oh and a great recipe for roasted cauliflower.
A vegetable I kind of like but never been head over heels excited about, unless cheese was involved.
This recipe makes me head over heels crazy for cauliflower!

Tamari Roasted Cauliflower

1 head of cauliflower

3 Tablespoons Tamari
(could use soy sauce but why?)
1 Tablespoon Honey
1 scant Tablespoon Fish Sauce
1/4 cup olive oil
(next time I'm trying toasted sesame oil)
Juice of one lime
A sprinkle of chili powder, optional

Whisk all ingredients, toss with cut up cauliflower, roast in a 425 degree F. oven for 30 -35 minutes.
Stir a couple times during roasting.

ebb and flow........

Sitting in the cocoon of my studio this morning, hands dipped in warm water, pulling centered clay up to the hum of wheel.  My coffee cup steams with the first morning brew.  It is a good place to be, I have never felt so comfortable or happy in this place.  The chickens are talking, the wind is blowing and the snow is melting, methodically dripping off the roof.

The last planes are departing the airport this morning filled with the lingering Miller tribe.  The house is quiet and settling back into the ebb and flow of life on this rainy, cold winter morning.  Planes and cars have arrived and departed to the four directions; New England, LA, Florida, Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Benin Africa, Beijing China.  It was a send off I think my mother in law would have loved.  Her house was full and brimming with her progeny.  The chatter was deafening with greetings, stories and solace.  Three generations crowded into the tiny house on Walnut Blvd in Ashtabula.

My mind reeled with the thought of just how many people would be converging on this tiny town during one of the worst winters in ages.  We pondered where we would eat and visit.  There were no options.  I had the kitchen, the freezer, a basement full of food and the pots needed to prep all this food. The calls started coming in, Rachael was here.  I looked at her and she said; "Mom, let's burn it down!"  So we did!  We opened our house to cousins who fit in seamlessly here at happy acres.  For 5 days pans bubbled on the stove, the food processor got a work out and the kitchenaid mixer never stopped.
Betsy and I rocked the Apron Brigade.  Evening were spent lingering over bourbon and long yearned for conversation not accomplished through facebook, email or phone.

The first night was lasagna, salad, sundried tomato dressing and chocolate chip cookies.

The second night, chili and cornbread, salad greens with leftover dressing and a few more cookies.  Lunch the next day would be taco salad with the leftover chili and salad.  Packed on the side, a jar of salsa, a bag of corn chips and bag of grated cheese.

The third night was meat loaf, leftover carrot raisin salad and angel food cake served with pineapple in rum sauce.

The fourth night was Sunday and most of the clan have arrived. Due to the storms, planes had been delayed, re-routed or cancelled.  Nieces and nephews arrived by four wheel drive from Vermont and NYC, very tired travelers found their way to front door.  Two turkeys were roasted off, 50 yeasted rolls sat raising by the woodstove, dilled potato salad with capers, three bean salad,  brussel sprouts were roasted with walnuts and bacon and dessert was a double batch of cheesecake.  Palmaries were baked off filled with caponata, pesto and sundried tomato fillings, perfect with a glass of wine or beer while the table was set.

The fifth night two huge pork loins were roasted off, one in sauerkraut, one seasoned with a dry rub.  The pork loin was accompanied by baked beans and coleslaw.  There were plenty of desserts leftover.

The sixth day of the funeral was leftover day.  We hauled out every single bowl or pot of food that had made it's way to the table over the week long gathering.  As the bowls emptied, dishes were washed and put away.

I had traveled to the grocery store two times during the undertaking.  Almost everything was on hand.  My receipts totaled out to $167.00  Toss in an extra $100 for meat in the freezer and we fed thirty people for 6 days for under $300.  My garden had paid off, as had the canning and food preservation of the last summer.  On a good note......... we are not wiped out.  The basement is still full and the freezer still has enough to get us through the winter.  The turkey carcass is being turned into soup as I type, feeding us for another few days.

Besty, first commander in the Apron Brigade.

A table set ........

The kitchen was a very good place for me to be during this gathering.  My two sister in laws and husband had their hands full with details, paperwork and exhausting meetings.  The details can be overwhelming.  I was so happy to be able to do this! The funeral was just tough...... many stood at the church filled with overwhelming memories over so many birthdays, passings, pilgrimages and feasts.  My kids had so many great years in the harbor with cousins and aunts and were taken aback at the grieving.  After the memorial service a luncheon was served by the church ladies.  My kids disappeared outside.  I chased them down in the parking lot and opened the back door of the car they were sitting in.  The cigarette smoke poured out, as did the laughter.  I jumped in to yell at my darling girls but realized they were telling hilarious memories of their Grandmother.  Funny stuff they wanted/needed to remember her for, I sat listened and breathed in the smoke (God, I miss smoking there are times it just has it's place....) the smoke went up to the heavens with tearful laughter in the privacy of Abby's car.  We so badly needed to laugh, smoke and cry a little.  I had to ask why they felt they couldn't share these memories in the church as they were part of Grandma.  They felt the grieving was too great, their Dad was having a very hard time too.  In reality these stories would have helped everyone.  And yet at graveside in -23 degree weather another niece came up and said; Wow Grandma game me my first Danielle Steele novel.   The woman who had tethered everyone to this homestead on the shores of Lake Erie for 96 years, lived on the same street for 85 years, knew what each grandchild had needed on their journey to grow had had a grand ride.  Everyone was now untethered, kind of scary.  Will we every gather like this again?  I think it will happen........  And I will volunteer to bring my apron :)

it's January ...........

Heat wave!  A high of 5 F. today!  Break out the Fat-kini!  We have been polar punched so many times  we are dingy.  Never hearing the phrase polar vortex in my 60 years, I can sprinkle it in any sentence, including recipes.

A normal January is respite time, hibernating, reading, garden planning and quiet.  Well the poles must be shifting because there is no more normal!  Indeed I ran around the backyard this morning doing morning chores and didn't realize I had my long johns on inside out until I put my jeans on!

Cannot get the studio above 52 F.  But stuff is getting done.  Moving at the speed of old dog looking for a place to poop on a cold winter morning.

Although I am becoming accustomed to throwing in a hat and bulky sweater I have almost killed myself sitting on a heating pad!  The cord is just killer so I nixed the heating pad and went for the Ohio Spa treatment.  Fill an old wool sock with rice and left over garden lavender.  Stitch the end shut and microwave for 1 minute.  Heaven!  Why would anyone want hot stones when you can have a rice sock on your neck or face?

Besides we can't even get to a spa!

Eating their way through the garden, the deer have emptied the bird feeder every night.

Polar blue skies!

The chickens are cooped up.  They kick up a fuss around 7 a.m, this morning I slide breakfast into the coop as they were not coming out!  Happy to say laying has resumed, the girls are up to three eggs a day!

January is time for reflection and no matter how crazy it gets there is still time for reflection.
This little junco hit the window late Wednesday morning.  We all ran out to see what the explosion was that hit the window.  We held the little guy while he expired in our hands.  We had a beer and waited for him to come back to life.  We told stories about animals who had entered the Miller zone in the past, finished our beer but after an hour realized this little ball of fluff had seen his last sunrise.  We buried him at the base of the compost pile as it was the only loose earth we could find.  We had just sat Shiva for a junco.....

The universe has a wonderful way of communicating if you want to listen....... Thursday morning my Mother in Law passed away peacefully in her sleep. She was 94 and had a great life.  Rachael only makes it home once a year and she is here now.  Abby and Rachael had time to visit with her Sunday; a real visit to sit, have tea and talk.  Rachael went back on Wednesday morning to visit a bit more before she headed off to Africa.  The timing was amazing and a bit mind boggling.  The Miller clan is descending on a frozen Ohio town on Lake Erie over the next few days.  The funereal will be next Tuesday, slated to be the coldest day of the year.  The stove is doing double time as is the cook.  Last fall when I was filling the freezer and basement I questioned why was I putting up so much food this year?  Most of the restaurants close down in the winter and there are going to be 30 people to feed.  It's all covered.......  The stories will be told, the beer we just bottled will be drunk and the freezer is going to be emptied.  We will gather in the house her father built for her and her new husband so many years ago.  There will be three generations, she kept track of each and everyone..... all the way to Beijing and Africa.   Quite a brood came from that little house on Walnut Blvd in Ashtabula. And although this has been so tough on my wonderful partner of over 30+ years the celebration will be EPIC.  As oldest kid said,  Mom we are gonna burn it down.  I think Ruth would love it .......
